A Quick Guide to Gym Motivation

Now that the nights and morning are dark, not to mention cold and often rainy, it can be seriously challenging to find the motivation to go to the gym in the morning or after work.

The need for a bikini body seems so far away and, with Christmas on the way, the desire to indulge in food, drink, and relaxation can be strong.

If you’re lacking motivation to keep up your fitness, or even start your gym journey, don’t fret! There are plenty of ways that you can get yourself in gear again – keep reading for our tips for getting motivated to go to the gym.

Buddy up

Do you have a friend who’s into fitness, too? Going to the gym together can really spur you on, especially if you know that your friend is relying on you for a lift. Plus, you have someone to vent to if 

If your schedules don’t match up and you’re not able to go to the gym with your friend, you can still motivate each other by holding each other accountable. It’s a lot harder to bail on your session if you know someone is expecting you to go!

Hit the gym early

We’ve all been there. You’re sitting at your desk at work, it’s getting later and later in the afternoon, and all you can think about is going home, putting your feet up, and having a cup of tea.

Simply put, if you’re able to go to the gym early in the morning, you have a lot less time to talk yourself out of going. Also, with the endorphins and energy that exercise provides, going to the gym in the morning can set you up for a really productive day!

Keep your goals realistic

While having long-term goals is important, if you set the bar too high, you can get overwhelmed. This is a common occurrence that can make people’s desire to go to the gym drop.

Make sure your goals are realistic. If you’re not sure if your fitness goals are attainable, speak to someone at your gym – they should be able to help you set some milestones.


One of the best ways to get motivated for the gym and stay motivated throughout your session is to listen to music that gets you pumped!

Whether it’s cheesy 90’s pop, drum and bass, or anything in between, the music you choose will be personal to you. 

Similarly, the way in which you listen to that music depends on what works best around your routine, but iPods, phones with the Spotify app, and good old fashioned Youtube can be simple options.

Track your progress

Tracking your progress at the gym, whether that’s weight loss, muscle gain, stamina, strength, or something else, is really important when it comes to motivating yourself. Without tracking your progress, you’re not as likely to see all the benefits of your hard work.

Seeing little (or big!) progressions can give you huge motivation to carry on your fitness journey, so note them down on your phone, an app, or even just make a mental note. We think that will really help you.
